THE UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO REGIONAL INSTITUTE

The University at Buffalo Regional Institute promotes regional progress by building understanding of key policy and governance issues for regions.
With focused analysis of the Buffalo Niagara region, the Regional Institute leverages the resources of the university and binational community to pursue a wide range of scholarship, projects and initiatives that frame regional issues, inform regional decisions and guide regional change.

A major research and public service division of the University at Buffalo, the Regional Institute is a unit of the UB Law School. In addition to university faculty and academic researchers, the institute’s partners include governments, foundations, businesses, civic groups and nonprofits.

Focus Areas:
The Regional Institute concentrates its work in four key areas with particular relevance to the binational Buffalo Niagara region.

Economy
Regional transition from an industrial to knowledge-based economy brings profound challenges and offers new opportunities. What tools, innovations and strategic investments hold the most promise for growth in the 21st century economy?

Governance Reform
Regional governance consists of a complex network of public, private and nonprofit players operating from the neighborhood to the national and international scale. What does effective regional governance look like, and how do regions achieve it?

Regional Demographic Change
Immigration, the aging of society, racial and ethnic change and the suburbanization of poverty – such demographic shifts are significantly shaping regions. How prepared are regions for demographic change and what policies are appropriate?

Cross-Border Regions
Any border, but especially an international one, raises questions of trade, security, mobility, cultural identity and environmental stewardship. What does it mean to be a binational region in a global world?
